Lese has released Version 2 of Codec, their most popular and creative free bitcrusher VST audio plugin. Codec is a unique sound degradation tool that simulates the effects of internet audio compression, rather than traditional analog or digital degradation methods like tape or vinyl.
A New Era of Sound Destruction
Unlike typical lo-fi plugins that emulate analog noise or vintage gear, Codec works by compressing and decompressing audio in real time using simulated audio codecs. This mimics the kind of degradation heard when streaming low-quality audio, bringing a distinctly modern edge to your sound design toolbox.
Version 2 of Codec introduces several powerful new features:
New Features in Codec v2
- Packet Disorder: Shuffles packets before feeding them into the decoder, introducing a disjointed, fragmented character.
- Noise Insertion: Adds colored noise before encoding, resulting in additional artifacts and messier audio.
- Crunch Enhancements: Crunch intensity can now be adjusted directly via the visualizer. Users can also change the filter shape used during the crunching process.
These additions enhance Codec’s already impressive ability to create glitched, digital textures and crushed audio artifacts that are perfect for experimental sound design.
Plugin Formats and Compatibility
Codec v2 is available for free and supports the following plugin formats:
- Windows: VST3 and AAX
- macOS: VST3, AU, and AAX (Intel and Apple Silicon)
