Analog Obsession has released EDComp, a free pre-emphasis and de-emphasis-based compressor plugin with an additional “CLEAN” mode. EDComp is available for macOS and Windows users in VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats.
Pre-Emphasis Compression with Smooth Control
EDComp is designed with an S-Type channel compressor concept where the threshold is fixed at a high value, and the ratio increases from 1:1 to 10:1. This approach provides smoother dynamics and effective leveling without aggressive gain reduction.
The plugin includes two operation modes:
- ED (Emphasis/De-Emphasis): Enhances lows and highs based on carefully selected frequencies, similar to a tilt EQ. While designed with vocals in mind, this mode is effective on a variety of sources.
- CL (Clean): Operates without any emphasis or de-emphasis, offering a more neutral compression.
Attack and release times are fixed at 15ms and 80ms, respectively, making the plugin fast and musical.
Plugin Controls and Features
- Amount: Sets the intensity of compression.
- Button: Toggles between ED, CL, and Bypass modes.
- Output: Controls the final output level.
- Mix: Allows parallel compression by blending the dry and processed signals.
Ideal Use Scenarios for EDComp Free Compressor Plugin
EDComp shines in vocal processing, thanks to its emphasis/de-emphasis mode that subtly enhances presence and warmth. It’s especially effective on vocal recordings that need clarity in the highs and more controlled low-end without over-compression. The fixed attack and release settings offer a smooth, musical response, making it a reliable tool for lead vocals, backing harmonies, and even voiceovers.
Beyond vocals, EDComp is also useful for taming dynamic instruments like acoustic guitars, synths, and drum overheads. Its “CL” clean mode provides transparent compression suitable for mix buss tasks or final polish. The mix knob allows for easy parallel compression, giving users precise control over intensity without sacrificing natural dynamics.
