Audible Genius has released a major update to their Primer synth, version 2.0.019, now available as a free download. Originally designed as a learning tool for the award-winning synth training app Syntorial, Primer has grown into a capable subtractive synthesizer suitable for a wide range of music production tasks.
Simple Yet Capable Synth Engine
Primer is designed with educational clarity while offering a deep and flexible subtractive synthesis engine. The interface is clean and easy to navigate, making it ideal for newcomers and experienced producers alike.
Version 2.0.019 includes a generous factory library with 400 presets. It also introduces the new Famous Sounds Preset Library, which contains recreated patches of iconic synth sounds from well-known songs.
The synth engine includes three oscillators: two standard oscillators with waveform, pitch, pulse width, and mix controls, and a sub-oscillator with waveform and volume controls. A noise oscillator and FM knob add extra tonal flexibility. Features such as oscillator sync, ring modulation, unison, and portamento open the door to complex and evolving sounds.
Modulation and Effects
Primer includes standard modulation tools like:
- LFO with four waveforms, multiple destinations, and rate/amount controls
- Filter envelope (ADSR)
- Amp envelope (ADSR)
- Additional modulation envelope (AD)
These tools are complemented by effects such as distortion, chorus, phaser, delay, and reverb. There’s even a visualizer that lets you watch envelopes and LFOs in real time, as well as a randomizer for quickly generating unique patches.
Designed for Learning and Exploration
Although designed as a learning instrument for Syntorial, Primer is a serious synth in its own right. Its clear interface and broad feature set make it a great choice for sound design, songwriting, and live performance.
System Compatibility
Primer is compatible with macOS and Windows in AU, VST, and VST3 formats. An iPad version is also available as a standalone app and Audio Unit Extension.
